Pawleys Island, South Carolina
One of the oldest beach resorts on the East Coast, Pawleys Island was originally a summer retreat frequented by wealthy rice planters. South of Murrells Inlet and only four miles long and a half mile wide, the self-proclaimed "arrogantly shabby" island is a laid-back beach destination that has become famous for its hand-woven hammocks that can be found at The Original Hammock Shop on U.S. 17.
